Our Mission

To cease the industrial operations causing the public, health and environmental impact and disable any further similar industrial activity from re-starting. to restore our community, health and economy.

Stop the Pollution & Industrial Damage

At the heart of our mission is the goal to stop the pollution caused by Berry Polymers (more recently renamed Plasgran). The pollution includes fly infestations, unpleasant smells, disruptive noises, gulls, and harmful microplastic pollution. These issues not only impact the health and environment of our residents but also have negative effects on the local economy. Our aim is to restore the community to enable people to live and thrive. We have a right to clean air, to be physically and mentally healthy, and have access to hygienically safe and livable homes.

Compensation

The outfall has hit peoples homes, health, livelihoods, and our local economy hard. Local restaurants have had to let staff go due to the fly and smell volumes putting off customers. The volume of fly faeces on all surfaces (walls, ceilings, every day items like toasters, door handles and lightbulbs) is unimaginable. For both hygiene and aesthetic purposes (as there is so much of it), cleaning the faeces from surfaces has resulted in significant damage to interiors of homes. This is due to the daily re-covering of faeces and daily cleaning.

Those that can/can afford it have had their interiors repaired and repainted however into its second year this has proved pointless as the problem has intensified.  Those that can afford it have covered their homes in fly screens but not everyone can do that. The daily lives of adults and children, including the vulnerable in the community are being so negatively impacted where flies crawl on them day and night, this along with the smells and noise results in severe sleep deprivation, stress and reduced ability to work effectively. Those that work from home suffer it while working, and those who work away (i.e. providing key roles in the public health sector) are unable to work effectively due to the sleep deprivation and sickness. This year people in the community are reporting a rise in respiratory conditions i.e. breathing difficulties, recurring nausea, sickness, gastric issues and headaches.

The amount of time and work that has been dedicated already by not only the core voluntary RAPID group, but the hundreds of people submitting daily reports to the respective agencies is huge. This has considerably detracted from professional work, home life and quality of life.
